Go Tell It On The Mountain!
UPDATE: The Penyfan Climb took place on 12th April, 2024. Here is Justin’s reflection on his experience:
After weeks of looking at weather forecasts and charts, the day of the 12th April presented itself as the best chance of completing the walk – dry, safe, warm and happy. On arriving at the Pontarduf car park I realised that hundreds of other people thought so as well, as I could see a long line following the trail all the way up.
After completing the checks of my kit I sped off to join the long line of people, crossed the bridge across the stream and started to climb. Shortly afterwards I knew that I was unprepared as my legs were shouting at me to stop, turn around and go back own. To keep going I had to find a rhythm which was to walk 40-50 steps, stop, get breath back, then start the process again. This meant two things: one, that I would pass slower people and they would pass me back, and then I would pass them again, etc…and two, that I would get lots of time to get great views and take some lovely pictures.
An hour later, two thirds of the way up, I noticed that the weather had changed. The lovely conditions blow had turned into a roaring wind and lots and lots of cloud. Everyone above me disappeared from view and after being in the crowd it started to feel solitary and alone. This was when I though maybe I should turn back, so I took a video of that point, felt better and carried on.
I reached the top, could not see a thing, heard and felt the roaring wind, saw very few people up there – most had travelled back – lost my way, found it again, and was relieved that I found the path again.
Going don felt great and each step each step downwards I got warmer, and ended up an hour later down at base camp in perfect sunshine and with crowds of people again.
What did I learn?……
Moses went up a mountain and received Ten Commandments…………I went up a smaller mountain and received one namely ‘Respect.’ Respect the environment, the situation, each other, and yourself.
Finally many thanks for all that have sponsored me. Also many thanks to all that will do, or have yet to sponsor me, as the money is going to a great cause.
P.S. I don’t think my legs have forgiven me yet!!!
What’s Justin doing?
As an unfit 50+ chorister, Justin has bravely decided to climb Pen-Y-Fan sometime in April 2024 to raise money for St Mary’s Church Hall
A Message from Justin
Just a quick note to explain why I’m walking up Pen-Y-Fan to raise money for St Mary’s Church Hall, in Whitchurch, Cardiff.
St Mary’s Church has, like most organizations, rising costs to maintain its premises in good order. St Mary’s Church Hall is especially in need of repair. I personally have a great attachment to this church hall, as around half a century ago I had a fantastic time there as a Cub, and later as a Scout. These are treasured memories, now and always.
50 years on and St Mary’s Church Hall still hosts community groups and organisations; Brownies, Guides, toddlers groups, a Youth Club, Dance Classes and judo, to name just a few. This generation of young people are building their own treasured memories and experiences for their futures. I would, therefore, like the church hall to be there for them and for future generations.
Any money you donate will be gratefully received and well spent on maintaining this fantastic community hall.
Thank you for your support.
